History

When Rex Mason, the original Metamorpho, fell to Earth protecting his comrades, his body dispersed into many pieces. Though most pieces were recollected, one fragment reformed itself into its own separate consciousness. Understandably, this new Metamorpho had limited memory of its past and he eventually came under the wing of S.T.A.R. Labs in California. While there, he ran into the Titans and Young Justice during their fight against a rogue Superman robot. After this battle, Arsenal formed a new version of the Outsiders, and the new Metamoprho, feeling homeless, latched onto the band.

Soon, the original Rex Mason learned of his duplicate's activities and came to reassimilate him. The Outsiders were not so quick to allow this and in the end, Rex decided that this new version of himself was indeed a unique sentient being. He was allowed to continue his life with the Outsiders and choose a name for himself: Shift; he decided not to take an alter ego.

From the beginning, Shift shared a bond with his fellow teammate, Indigo. The two of them have found common ground in their searches for identity. This attraction has recently bloomed into a full-fledged romantic relationship.

When Arsenal discovered that their headquarters had been breached, he interrogated each member to try and uncover a traitor. But all along, he suspected Shift, and he finally concluded for certain that Shift was responsible. Shift's physiology had been used to transform into nanobytes which were manipulated remotely. Shift claimed innocence, but Roy imprisoned him. (#23)

+ Powers

Shift can transmute his body to any of a wide variety of elemental compounds and form it to his will. Originally, he was limited to the elements which occur naturally in the human body. Over time, this limitation seems to have disappeared.

Unlike the original Metamorpho, he can also absorb extraneous matter and incorporate it into his own form.
