Tasmanian Devil

Created by E. Nelson Bridwell & Ramona Fradon

+ History

Hugh Dawkins was not always the hulking furball he is today. As a child, both he and his father, Norman, were verbally abused by his mother. After becoming the Tasmanian Devil, Hugh began his career as Australia's representative in the Global Guardians. When the Guardians disbanded, "Tas" became affiliated with the Justice League International's Australian embassy (JLA Annual #3), where he was captured and nearly dissected by alien forces during the Dominators' invasion. Taz officially joined the JLI during the "Breakdowns" saga for only a brief time. (chapters 3-8) Soon thereafter, he returned to aid them against Sonar (JLE #47-49), and afterwards rejoined the European branch (#50). He remained with them until their dissolution. (#68)

Since leaving the League, he has helped his former comrades in the Guardians and become the Justice League's first "out" gay member. (Justice League Quarterly #8) He was last seen at Maxwell Lord's funeral. (Justice League America #96)

This character changed a bit after the Crisis. He wasn't as shaggy and had a different personality — he'd been very interested in the ladies (notably Wildcat II). Also, he originally debuted in the Super Friends comics, which were generally not considered a part of regular pre-Crisis continuity.
