John Henry Irons (reluctantly) joined the newest League as part of their first major recruitment drive. (JLA Secret Files #2) He served a reasonable tenure then changed his status (JLA #43), but continues to serve frequently as a reservist.
Steel died in battle against Brainiac 13 and Imperiex (Man of Steel #116) but was spared by the Black Racer from proceeding onto the afterlife. John Henry returned to action after accepting an offer from Darkseid to wear the Entropy Aegis, a powerful suit of armor. (Man of Steel #117) The suit, however, put Steel firmly under Darkseid's influence, and he was rescued by Superman and others from Apokolips. Irons sustained serious injuries in the battle, which have since prevented him from donning any armor. Instead, John Henry's niece, Natasha Irons, recently took over for him as Steel (IV). John himself remains active as a valued aide to Superman.
