Oberon
Created by Jack Kirby
+ History
It seemed life had dealt Oberon a cruel hand. Orphaned at an early age when his parents were killed in an apartment fire, the tenacious Oberon joined a traveling circus. He found that show business was in his blood, and that playing a minor, helpful role behind the scenes could be as important as being in the limelight. The circus owner subjected poor Oberon to cruel indignities until Thaddeus Brown, a.k.a. Mister Miracle, Super Escape Artist, made Oberon his assistant and later his manager in charge of refining new escapes and promoting the shows. Oberon attributes his prematurely gray hair to worrying about Thaddeus risking his life night after night. Over the years, it didn't seem to matter how many times Mister Miracle performed spectacular escapes, Oberon still worried about him.
Oberon soon met a quixotic young man called Scott Free. After Thaddeus Brown was murdered by a drug baron named Steel Hand, Scott helped rescue Thaddeus's son, bringing the killer to justice. (Mister Miracle v.1 #1) Scott Free, with his odd technology and pacifistic ways, continued the legacy of Mister Miracle and taught Oberon more about life, freedom, and love than many people can ever hope to know. Oberon took the fact that Scott was the son of Highfather of the New Gods in stride. He has been by Scott's side through thick and thin, and when dealing with the likes of Darkseid, evil ruler of the planet Apokolips and enemy of the New Gods of New Genesis, things can get pretty thick and awfully thin. When Scott married Big Barda, Oberon was there and took up permanent residence with Mr. & Mrs. Free; when Mr. Miracle joined the Justice League, Oberon was part of the package deal. For years, the Justice League was Oberon's family. He threw himself wholeheartedly into his administrative role in the organization. (Justice League America #1-60) He has long since been an unofficial member of Scott and Barda's family as well. The couple prefers to live on Earth, and Oberon has resided with them in Bailey, New Hampshire and Greenwich Village, New York.
Oberon is efficient, hard-working, trustworthy, feisty, argumentative, and stubborn. Yet, he forms strong bonds with people and tends to be very protective of all his colleagues. They fill an emptiness in his life, and yet it is a loss no one can ever really fill.

+ Powers
As quick-thinking as he is quick-witted, Oberon's ingenuity has gotten Scott and the Justice League (and himself) out of some very dangerous scrapes. Although possessing no super-powers, he is a master of down-and-dirty street fighting. When he gets his dander up, the most powerful super-criminals shake in their boots even if they're not wearing them.
Despite everything he has seen, Oberon retains an obstinate skepticism about the fantastic people he meets and predicaments that seem to occur on a daily basis with Mister Miracle and the League. Sarcasm is his way of dealing with most situations. Although he's Billy Goat Gruff personified, most people, especially those of the opposite sex, find him charming irresistible, even. A relationship between Oberon and fellow Leaguer Fire has been intimated. For all his bravado, when confronted with a woman as brazen as she is, Oberon shies away.
