+ History
Jay Garrick married his college sweetheart, Joan Williams, in 1947. They were separated during the Justice Society's time in the Ragnarok cycle, during which Joan believed her husband dead, but were happily reunited when the JSA returned two years later. Not long ago they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Jay and Joan have recently revealed that they had a child who died in infancy. (JSA #20) They have also become very close to the "Flash family" of heroes: Barry (Flash II) & Iris West Allen; Wally & (Flash III) & Linda Park West; Bart Allen (Impulse, the grandson of the deceased Barry Allen); Jesse Chambers (Jesse Quick, daughter of Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle); and Max Mercury.
Following the death of Superman, Wonder Woman asked him to serve as their temporary field leader. (Justice League America #78-89) He also participated in many of the original JLA/JSA team-ups.
Geoff
Johns Says: Along with Alan Scott, Jay is as important to the
DC Universe as Superman in my eyes. He represents that tie to history
and tradition and he fills a role no one else does. I think it’s
important to have older mentors in a fictional universe who kick ass,
just like Obi One and Gandalf. There was an editor at DC who no longer
is there that said when we launched JSA back in ’99, “You
should get rid of the ‘old guys’; they just make it lame.” I
immediately thought, this guy doesn’t get it. The greatest thing
about the DC Universe is the diversity in character types. From Adam
Strange to Zatanna. From Krypto to Swamp Thing. Why have all the same
type of characters? There are so many more stories to tell when you make
the possibilities endless. (from Newsarama)
