Brainwave II

+ History

Henry "Hank" King is the son of two Golden Age players: the longtime JSA foe Brain Wave (Henry King) and Merry Pemberton. He was conceived during the brief time when the Brain Wave had reformed his criminal ways. Upon the elder King's relapse however, Hank's mother disappeared. He was told that Merry had committed suicide, but her true course of action remains a mystery. Hank ultimately chose to follow the path of good, and aligned himself with the young heroes of Infinity, Inc. In their first case, Hank's father again repented with his dying breath. King Sr. sacrificed his life and bestowed Hank with his own mental powers to defeat the Ultra-Humanite. This may have been Hank's undoing: in the years to come, his father's evil legacy would blur the line between good and evil for Hank.

His increased mental powers put a strain on his romantic relationship with fellow Infinitor, Jade. After the team's breakup, Hank snapped from the guilt of his father's evil and founded the villainous Legion of Doom. Brainwave was ultimately stopped by Maxima's mental abilities and placed in treatment. During this time, Jade became involved with Kyle Rayner (Green Lantern). In jealousy, Hank attacked them and was nearly killed by Obsidian. Hank appeared to have abandoned his career as a hero and opposed Green Lantern again.

This anti-social behavior may have been due to his infection by the Venusian worm called Mister Mind. While serving as Mind's host, Brainwave joined Black Adam, Atom-Smasher and Northwind in a team to rival the JSA. (JSA #40) This group executed Kobra after his escape from authorities. (#51) Utlimately the JSA freed Brainwave from Mr. Mind's influence and reunited him with his mother, Merry (who had resurfaced as a member of the so-called Old Justice). (Hawkman #25) He was back in action soon enough, though, when Dr. Fate asked him to help free Sand from his Earthly imprisonment. (JSA #63)

Recently, another woman, who was also allegedly Merry's child, Jacqueline Pemberton, appeared calling herself Gimmix. She joined on as a member of the Vigilante's new Seven Soldiers of Victory. She also had red hair and made several references to meetings with other Golden Age heroes. Though she appeared young, her age was also questioned. She appeared only once and perished along with all its members after defeating the Miracle Mesa Monster; they were slaughtered by the Gods of the Miracle Mesa. (Seven Soldiers Special #0, SS: Bulleteer #2) It is still unclear whether Jacqueline is Henry's full sister.
