BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS — Volume Two
Zatanna alerts Batman to trouble in the realm inside Katana's Soul Sword. He sends Marvel to help Katana, who commits suicide to enter the Fukumaden — the realm inside the blade. Her brother-in-law, Takeo, has become emperor there and sends Battleaxe II to dispose of Katana's body in the real world. She assembles a rebellion but Marvel pulls her back into her body before she can confront Takeo. NOTE:Written by the Outsiders' creator, Mike W. Barr. Though published second, Batman states that Katana is his first "new" member. Outsiders: Five of a Kind — Katana / Shazam! (10.07)
Batman begins testing potential Outsiders, sending Boomerang on a mission with Nightwing to investigate problems on a S.T.A.R. Labs satellite. Bacteria-like chemoids have broken off from Chemo, who is chained outside. Nightwing moves to destroy Chemo for good, but is stopped by Boomerang who (under Amanda Waller's orders) asserts Chemo can be used to positive ends. Nightwing decides to leave the Outsiders. Batman wants to use Owen as his mole in the Suicide Squad. Boomerang's super-speed returns, presumably along with the Speed Force and Wally West (JLofA #10). Outsiders: Five of a Kind — Nightwing / Capt. Boomerang (10.07)
Metamorpho and the new Aquaman are sent to defend a disputed aquifer in the Sahara. They meet the region's magical protector, Halcyon, who possesses the Orb of Ra (which originally transformed Metamorpho). She reveals that Simon Stagg has threatened the aquifer with radioactive chemicals. Despite Stagg's pleas, Rex destroys the Orb and lets Halcyon go. Batman rejects Aquaman for membership because he fails to impress. Outsiders: Five of a Kind — Metamorpho / Aquaman (10.07)
Thunder and Martian Manhunter are sent under the Earth after Grayven, weak from his encounter with Ion. After that, Speed Queen came upon him and was killed. On Earth, he has built a machine to return Zeta Beam the god-killer back to Apokolips. Thunder decides to help him, but he betrays them. J'onn mimics the Black Racer and scares Grayven into teleporting away himself. Batman rejects Thunder for membership for aiding such a horrible killer. Outsiders: Five of a Kind — Thunder / Martian Manhunter (10.07)
From after the Amazon's attack, Batman sends Wonder Woman and Grace on a mission to Cleveland — Grace's home town. She was in foster care for years afterwards. They have free time and seek out the Lindsays, one of the families she lived with, but find they died in a car accident. Batman alerts them to a woman found by police: a Bana woman, Imani, with no memory. Diana deduces this is Antiope's sister. They go to stop a radioactive device and Grace's DNA stops it from detonating long enough to disarm it. Grace returns to the Outsiders' new base underwater to discover Thunder is not a member. Outsiders: Five of a Kind — Wonder Woman / Grace (10.07)
Grace is angered to find that Batman has denied Thunder membership. Batman explains that metahumans are under more scrutiny than every while villains roam free; a team is needed to challenge evil from under cover. They begin by infiltrating a villain hangout in Gotham City. They "befriend" young new villains Carface, Daisycutter, [alien] and Boom Baby. Bolt works the door. The Suicide Squad (the Outsiders' target) arrives and begin rounding up villains. Boomerang faces his former teammates. Grace secretly calls Thunder in. Catwoman spies on them and after the caper, she stows away on the Outsiders' submarine. NOTE:Squad members include: Deadshot, Plastique, the General, Bronze Tiger, Multiplex, Bane, Boomerang and Rick Flag. OUT3 #50 (11.07)
